Patriotic Wreaths for a Summer Front Door

Americana that lasts from Memorial Day to Labor Day, plus a tropical option. What is in Kandi's Summer and Patriotic collection and how to style it.

Summer is the longest gap in the wreath calendar. Spring comes down in late May and fall does not go up until September, and a lot of doors sit empty in between. Kandi's Summer and Patriotic collection is built for that stretch: Americana that carries from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and a tropical design for the door that would rather be at the beach.

Patriotic that does not look like a party store

The difference between a patriotic wreath that looks designed and one that looks like a bag of flag picks is the same as in every other season: a real palette, a real focal point, and florals treated seriously.

The Patriotic Wreath with Floral Swag is the elegant version: a natural grapevine base, a navy star-pattern fan as the focal piece, lush greenery, vibrant red roses and crisp white blooms. The fan carries the theme, and the florals make it a wreath. Nothing on it is plastic.

The All American Cherry Pie Patriotic Wreath is the full, oversized, celebratory version, with layers of rich navy foliage, red florals and soft ivory roses. It is built to be seen from the street on the Fourth of July, and it is a good example of how a bold theme still gets an elegant build when the florals are chosen well.

Red, white and blue is a palette, not a rule

The trick to Americana that lasts all summer rather than one weekend is treating red, white and blue as three colors to balance, not three colors to use equally. Navy as the dominant, white florals as the body, red as the accent. A wreath that is one-third each looks like a flag; a wreath that is mostly navy and white with a cluster of red reads as summer.

Greenery matters more than people expect on a patriotic wreath. Without it, the three colors sit on top of each other. With it, they have somewhere to rest.

The tropical alternative

Not every summer door wants a flag. The Tropical Paradise Wall Basket is a wall basket bursting with lush greenery, hibiscus blooms, exotic florals and tropical birds. It hangs like a wreath from a single hook but is built as a basket, so the florals spill forward and down. On a coastal door or a screened porch it does what a patriotic wreath cannot: it looks like the season without naming a holiday.

Summer and the sun

Summer is the hardest season on a wreath. A Savannah porch in July is hot, bright and humid, and direct afternoon sun will fade red and navy faster than any other colors. A covered porch is ideal. If the door gets full sun, choose a design with more white and greenery and less saturated red, and expect to bring it in for the hottest weeks. How to store seasonal wreaths covers keeping it out of the heat.

When to hang it

Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start, and Labor Day the end. A patriotic wreath hung the whole summer looks intentional; one hung only for the Fourth looks like it was forgotten about. If three months of Americana is too much, the tropical basket in June and July with the patriotic wreath swapped in for the week of the Fourth is a good rhythm.

Made once

Every piece in the collection is one of a kind, built by hand in Kandi's Savannah workshop and never repeated. Patriotic pieces tend to sell in May and June, so the shop, which sorts newest first, is the place to see what is currently available. If a design has sold, the listing stays and the next summer piece will be its own design.

Make your own

A patriotic wreath is a good intermediate project: the palette is fixed, so the lesson is balance and clustering. Why your wreath looks off covers the balance side, and the free Intro to Wreath Making course covers the foundations. Summer designs are taught live inside the Kreative Krew in the spring, a season ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Can a patriotic wreath stay up through Labor Day?

Yes. The Americana designs are built to carry the season, not just the Fourth.

Will the red fade?

In direct sun, over time, yes. A covered porch keeps it bright. The greenery and white hold up best.

Is the tropical basket a wreath?

It is a wall basket that hangs from a single hook like a wreath. It is built as a basket so the florals spill forward.

Do you ship these?

Yes, from the Savannah workshop, boxed so they arrive the way they left. See the shipping policy.
